Sports
play a major role in Rostraver Township. To meet the needs of all who want to
enjoy recreation, young and old, the Rostraver Commissioners and the Rostraver
Recreation Commission have established throughout the Township, in every community,
fields for recreational purposes.
There are two batting cages, one at the sports complex and the other at Fellsburg.
The John DiVirgilio Sports Complex hosted the State Police Softball tournament,
the WPIAL playoffs and championship, the District 9 Little League Playoffs,
and various All-Star Games. This new sports complex allows our sports teams
to participate in tournaments and play in All-Star games in their own township.
There is plenty of parking, so come out, enjoy, and let’s play ball!
There
are ball fields for baseball; fields for softball to pickup various games; batting
cages; tennis courts which are located in Fellsburg, Van Meter, and Collinsburg;
basketball courts located at Clair Manor, Webster, Van Meter, Collinsburg, and
Fellsburg. We also lease two fields in Van Meter, one field at St. Anne’s,
two fields at LaGrange, and one field at Collinsburg.
In
2001 the new John DiVirgilio Sports Complex, named after a life long resident
of Rostraver Township and dedicated volunteer to recreation, located behind
the Municipal Building was dedicated with a lot of room for expansion.
The
John DiVirgilio Sports Complex services all the residents of Rostraver Township.
According to the 2000 census, Rostraver Township has 11,634 residents, of which
1,529 children are enrolled in the Rostraver Township recreation program.
In
addition, the recreational fields are used by the Belle Vernon Area School District
which has over 3,000 students enrolled. Presently at this site are four ball
fields, numerous grand stands, two concession stands, one broadcasting booth,
a walking track, an electric scoreboard, and a football/soccer combination field.
The
dugouts for the baseball fields were built by the same company who built the
dugouts for PNC Park. Recently, a pavilion was constructed at the sports complex
and in the future there will be lighting on the two upper ball fields.
